Apache tomcat is an open source web container. It is not an application server like JBoss, Glassfish, etc. which are basically required for enterprise web applications. Typically consisting of EJBs and other heavy J2EE components.

Tomcat is one of the most widely used web servers by java developers (tomcat training). Its current version is 8.x. It is used to run the web applications. I’ve used it to for running the following applications:
  • JSP/Servlet applications.
  • Spring Framework based applications.
  • Struts 2 applications.
Apache Tomcat is used to deploy your Java Servlets and JSPs. So in your Java project you can build your WAR (short for Web ARchive) file, and just drop it in the deploy directory in Tomcat.

So basically Apache is an HTTP Server, serving HTTP. Tomcat is a Servlet and JSP Server serving (tomcat training) Java technologies.

Tomcat includes Catalina, which is a servlet container. A servlet, at the end, is a Java class (websphere tutorial). JSP files (which are similar to PHP, and older ASP files) are generated into Java code (HttpServlet), which is then compiled to class files by the server and executed by the Java virtual machine (tomcat training).
In simple words, Apache is a web-server meant to serve static web-pages. Example includes plain HTML pages (you can create a simple HTML page & Apache will serve it for you. Try using XAMPP or WAMP Server to see it for yourself (tomcat training) on Windows machines). Facebook, Google, or Wordpress sites are some of the examples .

Apache Tomcat, on the other hand, is an application server meant to serve Java applications (Servlets, JSPs etc). You can serve web-pages as well through Tomcat, but it is less efficient at that as compared to Apache training. IRCTC is one such website.
